PTT Posta Turkey Transport Service

They established the postal association on 23 October 1840 to meet Ottoman and foreign needs. The company opened the first mailing station, “Postahane-I Amire,” in Istanbul at Yeni Camii courtyard. They appointed officials to translate postal addresses written in languages other than Turkish. In 1855, they formed a separate Directorate of Telegraph to handle telegraph services starting in 1843. In 1871, they combined the Directorate of Telegraph with the Ministry of Post to form a new ministry. They created the Ministry of Post and Telegraph through this merger in 1871.

In 1876, they established worldwide postal transportation, and they introduced cash orders in 1901. On May 23, 1909, they renamed the organization Ministry of Post, Telegraph, and Telephone. They established Istanbul’s first manual telephone central, leading to this name change. By 1913, they transformed the organization into the General Directorate of Post, Telegraph, and Telephone. In 1933, they placed the General Directorate under the Ministry of Public Works and Settlement. By 1939, they integrated the General Directorate into the Ministry of Transport.

The organization was reclassified as a State Economic Establishment in 1984 after being designated a State Economic Enterprise in 1954. Under Law No. 4000, the General Directorate underwent a significant reorganization in 1994, resulting in the division of the General Directorate into the General Directorate of Posts and the Turk Telecom Corporation. On April 24, 1995, the General Directorate of Posts began operating independently.

In 2000, the General Directorate of Post and Telegraph Organization adopted its new name. Recent legislative changes, including Postal Services Law No. 6475, have redefined their responsibilities. The Law on Organization and Duties of the Ministry of Transport was enacted in 2011. These changes have led to updates in their organizational structure and operational duties.
