The sport’s history traces back to Captain Matthew Webb’s pioneering 1875 swim across the Strait of Dover. Less than twelve swimmers had managed the feat by 1927. The association was founded to authenticate claims, verify swim times, and regulate the sport. It has grown into a globally recognized authority on cross-channel swim, providing guidance and support to swimmers attempting the channel.

The organization underwent significant changes in 1999, implementing a new constitution to ensure compliance with modern standards. All swimmers who wish to attempt the channel must register, follow the set guidelines, and pass a careful vetting process. In partnership with an academy in the Middle East and North Africa, the organization promotes swimming in these regions. This partnership focuses on encouraging swimmers, including disabled athletes, to attempt the channel. The academy plays a critical role in preparing swimmers from this region to qualify for safe and successful channel crossings.

The academy, led by an experienced figure, offers comprehensive training and evaluation for prospective swimmers, enhancing their chances of success. Through this initiative, long-distance swimming continues to grow in regions once known for their strength in the sport.
